From what I understand, they want to charge devs and distributors for each sale of their product that uses Unity, because it contains their base code. They're legally unable to trace haw many are sold, so they're going to be using a 'proprietary system they've developed' to determine how many copies were sold. They refuse to describe how said system can track that when it's illegal, which most likely means it's going to be an estimate based on profits the game makes. Basically, 'Hey, you made a lot of money there; give us some now!' They want to also charge for *some* demos, but not others... again a case of 'Hey, you put out a lot of demos! Give us money for those!' based on popularity. This will set off a chain reaction of any publisher doing well with a game being charged, which will in turn be passed down to the devs, which in turn will be passed on to the consumers, all so Unity can make more money.
Good on you! As soon as I heard about Unity's plans, I said trolls and haters would uninstall and reinstall relentlessly to wreck people they don't like, and I was told it was even worse, as even without haters or trolls, simply growing popular too quickly could bankrupt people going forward. So I'm glad you're playing it safe, and I wish you luck with the new program!
I checked their official instagram and it says they were just joking about the deletion on twitter/x ( and all official media went nuts ) - But it will mean theyll be forced to learn something else so they have to push their major update. So I take it as theyre aiming to leave Unity but keep the game, IDK how it works to fully remake a game in another engine. So I guess we will have to see? I never experienced a game change engine like this.
Oath sorry to Hear this, you spent a lot of time on that game... the Fees are Stupid High now WOW I think this was to prevent hacking of games using Unity Tool by making licences super expensive..
Absolutely stupid thing to do to ligament Developers.. That Don't have Deep pockets..

Ars Technica has mentioned that they’ve backed off somewhat but I think Unity’s burnt too many people. If you want to keep using Unity, if only to preserve what work you’ve put in the engine, it’s suggested by others to stick with the 2022 TOS just to be safe. I don’t blame you if you start full on conversion to Godot. They’ve changed the deal in the past. They changed it now. Odds are good they’ll pull something like this again in the future. Looking forward to how CowHammer shapes up in the new engine.
It's doing some nice progress. Godot has its own set of issues, of course, but what doesn't? I'm slowly getting used to it and, overall, I think it's nicer to work with than Unity. And if it ends up failing, I'll figure something else out. CowHammer will be made, one way or another.
