The term "Alt-left" is used conservatives and the far-right, to smear their opponents - progressives and the far-left, by implying that they're equivalent to the "Alt-right" in terms of violence. Whether or not you agree with this implied equivalence between the far-right and far-left, is a matter of opinion. In this case, it's the quoted opinion of Mark Pitcavage. Thus his opinion should be in quotation marks, to keep this all neutral.

It implies an ACTUAL equivalence...which is why the term was being used. You may think it is "false" to claim such an equivalence, but the use of the term "Alt-left" does not intend it to be false. It's an smear term for violent leftist groups, implying they are equally violent to the Alt-right eg. "violence on many sides".
